St Mark’s School prides itself on the sports fields and courts of playing to win and playing fairly within the rules of the game. We have based our 'Sport Code of Conduct' on guidelines from Sport NZ. Our children have a proud reputation for a sense of fair play and excellent behaviour, both on the field and on the sidelines as spectators.

Players Code

  • Play to win, to give your best effort and also for the fun of it.
  • Play hard and play by the rules.
  • Respect the referee’s/umpire’s decisions and never question their rulings.
  • Recognise positive contributions made by team-mates and the opposition.
  • Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Encouragement for all efforts.
  • Cooperate with your coach, team-mates and opponents, for without them, you do not have a game.
  • Win with humility and grace; lose with dignity and grace.
  • Manage your St Mark’s School uniform and sports gear appropriately.

Parents/Caregivers Code

  • Remember, children are involved in sport for their enjoyment, not just yours.
  • Encourage your children to play by the rules always.
  • Never ridicule or yell at, or offer advice to a player or team for making a mistake during a game or practice.
  • Children learn best by example, that is, a positive role model.
  • Respect the referee’s/umpire’s decisions and never question their rulings.
  • Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches; they give of their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your children.
  • Ensure children have the correct St Mark’s School sports uniform and equipment.

Coaches/Managers Code

  • Coaches should set the team culture and players need a coach whom they can respect.
  • Be generous with your praise when it is deserved and set a good example at all times.
  • Be reasonable in your demands on young players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.
  • Never ridicule or yell at a player or team for making a mistake during a game or practice.
  • Develop team respect for the judgement of referees or umpires.
  • Follow the advice of medical professionals in determining when an injured player is fit to play again.
  • Insist on fair and disciplined play. Do not tolerate foul play or bad language. Be prepared to take off the offending player.
  • Game time to be equitable amongst the team, where possible.
  • Coaches will endeavour to share the Player of the Day award around the team over the season.
  • Ensure children have the correct St Mark’s School sports uniform and equipment.
  • Ensure correct safety gear is used.
  • Follow the St Mark’s School procedures at all times.

Spectators Code

  • Remember that children play organised sports for their own fun.
  • All spectator behaviour reflects on the players, the team and St Mark’s.
  • Applaud good play by your own team and by the opposition.
  • Show respect for your team’s opponents; without them there would be no games.
  • Never ridicule or yell at a player or team for making a mistake during a game or practice.
  • Respect the referee’s/umpire’s judgement. You should not question their rulings.
  • Encourage players to play according to the rules and fairly.
  • Never enter onto a playing area – the court, field or poolside unless requested to by the coach/manager.

PLEASE notify the Head of Sport if your child is leaving, or will be away for an extended period of time, so team replacements can be organised by the school if possible.
