Our music education programme covers a large number of concepts and topics and teaches a variety of practical skills which, in conjunction with our comprehensive extracurricular choral and instrumental program, develop well-rounded musicians, who leave St Mark’s strongly equipped for their secondary studies.
In the classroom music programme students explore pitch, tempo, rhythm, structure, dynamics, music theory, and instrumental and vocal performance.
In the lower school, the music programme is strongly based on the Orff and Kodaly approaches to music education. This develops strong vocal, aural and improvisational skills. Students also study for Trinity College London Music Theory examinations to support their practical musicianship.
Students have numerous other opportunities outside of weekly specialist lessons. These opportunities include: Choirs (Viva Voce, Con Brio, and Schola Cantorum), Jazz Band, Orchestra, Musical Theatre Clubs (both junior and senior) and itinerant music lessons.
Our music education programme is led by Anya Nazaruk, Director of Music – Diploma with Honors in Jazz Piano in the Rostov College of Arts, Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Bachelor of Music (Composition).
